Poland said on Friday it was pressing for NATO to take command of occupation forces in Iraq, but it was proceeding cautiously to avoid rekindling tensions over the US invasion. Jerzy M. Nowak, Warsaw's ambassador to NATO, said that a robust role for NATO in Iraq could help mend transatlantic divisions and lend legitimacy to an Iraqi government that is scheduled to take over from the US occupation regime on 1 July.
