Ok, this is my cheap effort to influence the debate on whether US should turn over authority in Iraq to UN.
Changing of Hats: process by which US forces will be integrated into an international force as the authority of an occupation is turned over to an international organization.
Why do I think new terms are necessary? Because I think that there exists a misperception that US soldiers could be brought out of danger by bringing in UN. If this were to happen, US would still remain in Iraq. It would be necessary for several reasons. First, UN will need heavily armed forces in large numbers in order to answer its concerns for
the safety and security of its workers and the Iraqi public. Second, US would have to show that it is willing to work in the international system, and US involvement in UN would have to increase on many levels. Simply put, the soldiers won't go anywhere--they will "change hats", from the US occupational force to somthing like the "United Nations Military Operations in Iraq (UNMOI)." There is no simple out for US soldiers.
